Rules regarding leave of absence from Bachelor and Master's programmes at the University of Copenhagen

These rules have been drawn up under the authority endowed by executive order no. 52, articles 33 and 39, of 28 January 2009 on admissions, etc. for Bachelor and Master's programmes at universities (the admission order).
Chapter 1
Leave of absence
1. Students are entitled to leave of absence from Bachelor and Master's programmes at the University of Copenhagen.
(2) Bachelor students who have completed the first year of study (passed at least 60 ECTS points) and passed their first year examination are entitled to leave of up to 12 months during a Bachelor programme.
(3) Master's students who have completed the first half year of study (passed at least 30 ECTS points) are entitled to leave of up to 12 months during a Master's programme.
(4) Master's students are not entitled to take leave of absence during the period in which the thesis is written. The thesis period is defined (cf. the programme order article 21) as the time frame set in the thesis contract and the time frame set for any second or third examination attempts.
(5) Leave due to childbirth, adoption, national service, UN service, etc., cf. the admission order's article 39, (2) and (3), may be granted irrespective of previous leave during the programme and irrespective of whether the first year of study on the Bachelor programme, or the first half year on the Master's programme, has been completed.
(6) All deadlines and study-activity requirements are suspended during periods of leave.
(7) Students are not allowed to attend classes on the programme during their leave. Nor are they allowed to sit examinations or tests on the programme in a semester or block during which they are, or have been, on leave of absence.
(8) The University may, however, grant exemptions from (2)-(4) under exceptional circumstances.
Chapter 2
Date of commencement
2. These rules come into force 1 September 2009 and apply to all Bachelor and Master's students enrolled at the University.
(2) All previous rules on leave are repealed when these rules come into force.
