In this PhD project I investigate how slavery intersected with privacy among free people of color in the Caribbean from 1750-1850. By focusing on free families of color in the free ports on Curaçao, St. Barthélemy and St. Thomas, my aim is to answer the question of how a structural, societal practice like slavery impacted, changed, and challenged family relations among free people of color. I am interested in investigating the friction slavery caused in intimate relations and how this shaped privacy in the colonial Caribbean.
