MA in African Studies

African studies is offered as a two-year postgraduate full-time study programme (120 ECTS-points) leading to a Masters degree (cand. mag.) in African Studies.
The study programme consist of the following components:
- Compulsory courses: “Economic Development in Africa” and “Nature, Population and Society in Africa”, “Politics, Development and Change in Africa” and “Religion, Culture and Society in Africa”
- Optional courses centred on themes like; Human Rights, Conflict in Africa, Decentralisation, Civil Society, Religion and Politics, Society and Environment, The Social Context of HIV/AIDS in Africa, Foreign Aid Policy etc. The topics vary from term to term
- Language course in Kiswahili
- Project work as fieldwork or internship in Africa
- Master Thesis
Admission
Enrolment in the MA programme in African Studies requires a relevant bachelor's degree in either social science, the humanities, theology or within certain disciplines in the life sciences, health sciences (e.g. public health) and natural sciences (e.g. cultural geography).
Other relevant Danish or international qualifications at the same level may also satisfy general entry requirements. It is a precondition that the students has, in his or her bachelor's studies, e.g. through elective courses, acquired knowledge and academic experience that relates to the disciplines that make up the MA programme in African Studies and which can be expanded during the course of studies. Following a specific, individual assessment, applicants holding a professional bachelor's degree can be admitted if the Study Board for African Studies deems that they have the appropriate educational background.
Tuition fees

Students from Scandinavia and EU/EEA countries: No tuition fees
- Students from non-EU/EEA countries with a permanent Danish residence permit: No tuition fees
- Students from non-EU/EEA countries: Tuition fees are DKK 53,500 per year
Deadlines for applying
Non EU/EEA-citizens: 15 January for admission 1 September.
EU/EEA-citizens, including Scandinavians: 1 April for admission 1 September.
Danish-citizens: 1 April for admission 1 September.

About the application procedure
When we receive your application, we check if it is complete and subseqently process it. Each application will be evauated individually, based on the admission requirements. Within two weeks after the deadline for applications, you will receive information about your application to the Centre of African Studies.
